# Thomas, Malory

## Biography

Sir Thomas Malory was an English knight and author, primarily known for compiling Le Morte d'Arthur, the definitive English prose account of the Arthurian legends. Born around 1415, he lived during the tumultuous era of the Wars of the Roses. His life was complex and controversial; he was often imprisoned for various alleged crimes, including robbery, extortion, and attempted murder, leading him to describe himself as a "knight prisoner." It was during these periods of incarceration that he undertook the monumental task of translating and compiling existing French romances into his comprehensive work. Completed around 1469, Le Morte d'Arthur was published posthumously in 1485 by William Caxton, who gave it its enduring title. Malory's singular vision revitalized the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, profoundly influencing later generations of writers and continuing to shape the modern understanding of Arthurian myth. He died in 1471.
