## Biography

Jose Rizal was a prominent Filipino nationalist, writer, and polymath born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna. A gifted student, he pursued studies in medicine in Manila and later in Europe, specializing in ophthalmology. Rizal became a pivotal figure in the Filipino Propaganda Movement, advocating for political reforms in the Spanish colonial Philippines. He authored two seminal novels, "Noli Me Tángere" in 1887 and its sequel, "El filibusterismo" in 1891. These works critically examined Spanish colonial abuses and the role of the Catholic friars, sparking a fervent call for change among Filipinos. Despite his commitment to peaceful reform, his writings inspired the Philippine Revolution. Upon his return to the Philippines, he was arrested and exiled. In 1896, falsely accused of rebellion, Jose Rizal was executed by firing squad on December 30 in Manila, solidifying his legacy as a national hero and a martyr for Philippine independence.
