# Gustave Flaubert

## Biography

Gustave Flaubert, a French novelist and a leading figure in literary realism, was born in Rouen in 1821. The son of a prominent surgeon, he developed a passion for literature early in life. Flaubert initially pursued law studies in Paris, but a nervous breakdown led him to abandon this path and dedicate himself entirely to writing. He spent most of his life at his family estate in Croisset, near Rouen.

His meticulous approach to writing and relentless pursuit of stylistic perfection defined his career. Flaubert’s most famous work, Madame Bovary, published in 1857, is widely considered a cornerstone of the modern novel, despite facing an obscenity trial upon its release. This novel, along with works like Sentimental Education and Three Tales, showcased his objective narrative style and profound psychological insight. Flaubert's dedication to his craft and his influence on subsequent generations of writers, including Guy de Maupassant, solidified his legacy as a master of prose before his death in 1880.
