## Biography

Aristophanes was an ancient Greek comic playwright from Athens, widely considered the foremost representative of Old Comedy. Born around 450 BCE, he lived through significant social and political upheaval in Athens, including the Peloponnesian War, events which often served as fodder for his sharp wit. He began his dramatic career around 427 BCE and is credited with writing approximately forty plays, though only eleven survive in complete form. His works are celebrated for their bold fantasy, merciless satire, and uninhibited political criticism, often targeting prominent figures like Socrates and Euripides, as well as societal issues. Aristophanes’ plays, characterized by preposterous premises, explicit language, and brilliant parody, offer invaluable insights into Athenian life and culture of the 5th century BCE. He earned acclaim and prizes for his comedies at Athenian religious festivals like the City Dionysia and Lenaia. He died around 386 BCE, leaving a legacy that profoundly influenced the genre of comedy.
