# Thomas Paine

## Biography

Thomas Paine was an influential English-American writer and political pamphleteer whose powerful words significantly shaped revolutionary thought in the late 18th century. Born in Thetford, England, in 1737, Paine faced early struggles and various occupations before immigrating to America in 1774 with the encouragement of Benjamin Franklin. He quickly became a pivotal voice in the American Revolution.

His seminal pamphlet, *Common Sense*, published in 1776, passionately argued for American independence from Great Britain and galvanized public opinion. He further inspired the Continental Army through his series of *American Crisis* papers. Beyond America, Paine supported the French Revolution with his work *Rights of Man*. His later writings, particularly *The Age of Reason*, which criticized organized religion, sparked considerable controversy. Thomas Paine died in New York City in 1809, leaving behind a legacy as a fervent advocate for liberty and democratic ideals.
