# Thomas, More

## Biography

Thomas More, later Saint Thomas More, was a distinguished English lawyer, social philosopher, humanist, and statesman, born in London on February 7, 1478. The son of a prominent judge, he received an excellent education at Oxford and Lincoln's Inn, where he trained in law. A renowned scholar, he became a close friend of Erasmus and authored the influential work Utopia in 1516, which depicted an imaginary ideal society. More served King Henry VIII, eventually rising to the esteemed position of Lord Chancellor of England in 1529. His unwavering moral principles, however, led him to resign in 1532, as he could not endorse the King's divorce or his claim to be the supreme head of the Church of England. For his refusal to accept the Act of Supremacy, More was convicted of treason and executed on July 6, 1535. He was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1935 and is revered as a patron saint of lawyers and politicians.
