# Christopher Marlowe

## Biography

Christopher Marlowe, baptized in Canterbury in February 1564, was an influential Elizabethan playwright and poet, a contemporary and significant predecessor to William Shakespeare. The son of a shoemaker, he received a strong education at King's School, Canterbury, and later Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees. During his time at university, there was speculation he served in Queen Elizabeth I's secret service.

Marlowe moved to London and quickly established himself as a leading dramatist. He is celebrated for his revolutionary use of blank verse in English drama, notably in plays like *Tamburlaine the Great*, *Doctor Faustus*, *The Jew of Malta*, and *Edward II*. His works explored complex themes and featured ambitious protagonists. Marlowe also contributed poetry and translations. His career was cut short when he died in May 1593 at the age of 29 in a mysterious tavern altercation in Deptford. His sudden death has been the subject of much debate and conspiracy theories, leaving an enigmatic legacy.
