# John Dewey

## Biography

John Dewey was a prominent American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer, born in Burlington, Vermont, on October 20, 1859. After graduating from the University of Vermont and earning his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University, he embarked on a distinguished academic career. Dewey taught at several universities, including Michigan, Chicago, and Columbia, where he spent the majority of his professional life until his retirement in 1930. He was a co-founder of the philosophical movement known as pragmatism, a pioneer in functional psychology, and a leading figure in the progressive education movement. His profound belief in democracy influenced his work across politics, education, and communication. Dewey notably founded the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools to implement and test his innovative pedagogical theories. Throughout his prolific career, he authored numerous influential books, including Democracy and Education and Experience and Nature, contributing significantly to American intellectual and social thought until his death in New York on June 1, 1952.
