# Washington Irving

## Biography

Washington Irving was a pivotal American author of the early 19th century, renowned for his short stories and historical works. Born in New York City in 1783, he was named after George Washington. Though he briefly studied law, Irving found his true calling in literature. He achieved international fame with The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., published in installments between 1819 and 1820. This collection introduced his most iconic tales, "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," which are often credited as among the first American short stories. Irving also served his country as a diplomat, notably as the American ambassador to Spain in the 1840s. His later career included biographies of figures like Christopher Columbus and George Washington. He passed away in 1859, leaving behind a legacy as one of America's first truly successful professional authors.
