# Guy Maupassant

## Biography

Guy de Maupassant, born Henri-René-Albert-Guy de Maupassant on August 5, 1850, in Normandy, France, became a celebrated 19th-century French writer, primarily known for his mastery of the short story. His childhood, marked by his parents' separation, profoundly influenced his perspective. Maupassant's literary career was significantly shaped by his mother's close friend, Gustave Flaubert, who became his mentor. After serving in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked in government ministries while honing his writing skills under Flaubert's guidance.

Maupassant’s prolific decade from 1880 to 1890 saw him produce over 300 short stories, six novels, and travel books. He is associated with the naturalist school of literature, often depicting daily life, human nature, and societal forces with realism and a sometimes pessimistic tone. His works, like "Boule de Suif" and "The Necklace," are celebrated for their economy of style and keen observation of social hypocrisy. Sadly, his career was cut short by mental illness, likely caused by syphilis, and he passed away in an asylum on July 6, 1893.
