# Felix Salten

## Biography

Felix Salten, born Siegmund Salzmann in Budapest in 1869, became a renowned Austrian author and critic. His family moved to Vienna shortly after his birth, where financial hardship cut short his formal education. He began his career at seventeen as a journalist, quickly becoming a prominent voice in Viennese newspapers. Salten was a prolific writer, contributing plays, short stories, novels, and essays, and was a key figure in the "Young Vienna" literary movement. He gained international fame with his novel "Bambi, A Life in the Woods," published in 1923, which Walt Disney later adapted into an animated film. Salten also authored other notable animal stories like "Perri" and "The Hound of Florence." As a Jewish writer, Salten faced persecution with the rise of Nazism; his books were banned, and he was forced to flee Austria for Switzerland in 1938. He lived there until his death in Zurich in 1945.
