# Upton Sinclair

## Biography

Upton Sinclair was an influential American author and social crusader, born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1878. Experiencing both poverty and wealth in his youth shaped his lifelong commitment to social reform and justice. He attended City College of New York and Columbia University, supporting himself by writing pulp fiction. Sinclair gained widespread fame for his 1906 novel, *The Jungle*, a groundbreaking work of muckraking journalism that exposed the unsanitary conditions and exploitation within the meatpacking industry. This novel led directly to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act. A prolific writer, Sinclair authored nearly 100 books, addressing various social issues and advocating for socialism. He also pursued political office, notably running for governor of California in 1934 on an "End Poverty in California" platform. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1943 for *Dragon's Teeth*. Sinclair passed away in 1968, leaving a significant legacy as a champion of the working class and consumer rights.
