## Biography

Jerome Klapka Jerome was an English writer and humorist, born in Walsall on May 2, 1859. His early life was marked by poverty after his father's death, leading him to leave school at fourteen for various jobs, including railway clerk, schoolmaster, and actor. These early experiences, particularly in theater, influenced his first book, *On the Stage—and Off* (1885).

He rose to prominence with the publication of his essay collection *Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow* (1886) and achieved widespread fame with his iconic comic travelogue, *Three Men in a Boat* (1889). Jerome co-founded and edited *The Idler*, a humorous magazine, and continued to produce works such as the sequel *Three Men on the Bummel* (1900) and numerous plays. During World War I, he served as an ambulance driver for the French Army. His autobiography, *My Life and Times*, was published in 1926, a year before his death on June 14, 1927.
