# John Mill

## Biography

John Stuart Mill, born in London on May 20, 1806, was a prominent English philosopher, political economist, and civil servant. Educated rigorously by his father, James Mill, with guidance from Jeremy Bentham, he became a central figure in 19th-century liberalism and utilitarianism. Mill began working for the East India Company at seventeen, where he had a long and distinguished career, eventually becoming Chief Examiner. His influential writings include *On Liberty*, a defense of individual freedom, and *Utilitarianism*, which refined Bentham's ethical theory. He was also a passionate advocate for social reforms, including women's suffrage, and served one term as a Member of Parliament. Mill died on May 8, 1873, in Avignon, France, leaving behind a profound legacy in political and ethical thought.
