# Bernard Shaw

## Biography

Bernard Shaw, born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1856, would later become one of the most significant English-language playwrights. He came from a family of modest means, and his mother's artistic pursuits influenced his early interest in music and literature. Disillusioned with formal education, Shaw left school at fifteen and eventually moved to London in 1876, where he initially struggled as a novelist.

His career shifted as he became a respected music and theatre critic. A committed socialist, Shaw was a prominent member of the Fabian Society, advocating for social reform. He began writing plays in the late 1880s, often using them as vehicles to explore social and political themes. His prolific output included major works such as Pygmalion, Man and Superman, and Saint Joan. Shaw received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925, recognizing his revolutionary contributions to comedic drama and his impactful social commentary. He continued writing into his nineties, passing away in 1950.
