# Friedrich Nietzsche

## Biography

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was a German philosopher and classical philologist, born in 1844 in Röcken, Prussia. His father, a Lutheran pastor, died when Nietzsche was young, and he was raised by his mother and sister. Nietzsche displayed exceptional intellect early, pursuing studies in theology and classical philology at the Universities of Bonn and Leipzig. At just twenty-four, he was appointed professor of classical philology at the University of Basel.

Plagued by severe and debilitating health issues, Nietzsche resigned from his academic post in 1879, dedicating himself entirely to writing as an independent philosopher. He spent years traveling across Europe in search of climates that might alleviate his chronic ailments, producing a significant body of work that critically examined morality, religion, and culture. His prolific output included major works such as *Thus Spoke Zarathustra* and *Beyond Good and Evil*. In 1889, at age forty-four, he suffered a complete mental collapse, living the remaining eleven years of his life in incapacitation under the care of his family, until his death in 1900. His radical ideas profoundly influenced 20th-century philosophy and literature.
