## Biography

Homer is the legendary ancient Greek poet traditionally credited with composing the epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey, two foundational works of Western literature. While details of his life remain largely unknown and are often shrouded in myth, scholars generally place his existence around the 8th century BCE. He is believed to have been a blind bard from Ionia, a region encompassing parts of present-day Turkey and Greek islands like Chios, though several cities claimed to be his birthplace. The "Homeric Question" continues to debate whether these monumental works were the creation of a single genius or the culmination of a long oral tradition. Regardless of his exact identity, Homer’s epics profoundly shaped ancient Greek culture, education, and notions of heroism, leaving an indelible mark on subsequent literature and thought for millennia.
