## Biography

Fyodor Dostoevsky was a renowned Russian novelist, short story writer, and philosopher, born in Moscow in 1821. Raised in a household where his physician father worked at a hospital for the poor, Dostoevsky was exposed to the stark realities of life from an early age, which profoundly influenced his later works. He initially pursued a military engineering education in St. Petersburg but soon dedicated himself entirely to literature, publishing his first novel, Poor Folk, in 1846 to critical acclaim.

His life took a dramatic turn in 1849 when he was arrested for his involvement with a literary discussion group critical of the Tsarist regime. Sentenced to death, his execution was commuted at the last moment to four years of hard labor in Siberia, followed by military service in exile. This harrowing experience, along with his deep study of the New Testament, led to a profound spiritual transformation and became a cornerstone of his later writings. Dostoevsky's major novels, including Crime and Punishment, Notes from Underground, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov, delve into complex psychological, philosophical, and religious themes, exploring human suffering, morality, and the search for meaning. He is celebrated as one of the greatest literary figures, renowned for his insightful portrayals of the human psyche and his enduring impact on world literature.
