# Dante Alighieri

## Biography

Born in Florence around 1265, Dante Alighieri emerged as a pivotal figure in Italian literature. He grew up amidst Florentine aristocracy and received an education encompassing grammar, philosophy, and literature, displaying an early talent for poetry. His life was profoundly shaped by his unrequited love for Beatrice Portinari, who became his enduring muse and the subject of his early work, *Vita Nuova*. Though he married Gemma Donati and had several children, Beatrice’s influence remained paramount.

Dante became deeply involved in Florentine politics, aligning with the White Guelphs. This involvement ultimately led to his exile from Florence in 1302, a banishment that lasted for the remainder of his life. During his exile, he began crafting his magnum opus, *La Divina Commedia* (The Divine Comedy), a monumental epic poem that journeys through Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. This work, considered a masterpiece of world literature, cemented his legacy as "the Supreme Poet" and was instrumental in establishing the modern Italian language. Dante died in Ravenna in 1321.
