## Biography

Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) was a prominent French philosopher and essayist, celebrated for pioneering the modern essay form. Born Michel Eyquem de Montaigne into a wealthy aristocratic family in Périgord, France, he received a rigorous education, including early exposure to Latin. He embarked on a career as a magistrate, serving in the Bordeaux Parlement and later as mayor of Bordeaux, navigating complex political landscapes during a period of religious strife. In 1571, Montaigne retired to his family estate, Château de Montaigne, to dedicate himself to study and writing. It was there that he began composing his seminal work, the Essais. This collection of personal reflections blended casual anecdotes with profound intellectual insights, exploring human nature, skepticism, and self-examination. His innovative approach merged autobiography and philosophical discourse, profoundly influencing Western literature and thought. Montaigne continued to revise and expand his Essais until his death.
