# Emily Bronte

## Biography

Emily Jane Brontë was born on July 30, 1818, in Thornton, Yorkshire, England, one of six children to Reverend Patrick Brontë. The family later moved to Haworth, a setting that profoundly influenced her writing. She was the sister of fellow novelists Charlotte and Anne Brontë, and together they cultivated rich imaginary worlds from childhood. Emily is best known for her only novel, Wuthering Heights, published in 1847 under the masculine pseudonym Ellis Bell. This powerful and enduring work of Gothic romance, set on the desolate Yorkshire moors, initially received mixed reviews but is now considered a classic of English literature. In 1846, she also contributed to a volume of poetry titled Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell with her sisters. Known for her intensely private and reclusive nature, Emily Brontë spent most of her life at home in Haworth. She passed away from tuberculosis on December 19, 1848, at the age of 30.
