## Biography

Victor Marie Hugo, born in Besançon, France, on February 26, 1802, rose to become a towering figure of French Romanticism. His early life was marked by his father’s military career and his parents’ differing political views, shaping his eventual passion for republicanism and social justice. A prolific writer across multiple genres, Hugo achieved early success with his poetry and plays, solidifying his reputation as a leading literary voice.

He is internationally renowned for his epic novels, including *The Hunchback of Notre-Dame* (1831) and the monumental *Les Misérables* (1862), which explored themes of poverty, redemption, and human dignity. Beyond his literary pursuits, Hugo was deeply involved in politics, serving as a deputy and senator. His outspoken opposition to Napoleon III led to an extended exile, during which he continued to write influential works. Upon his return to France, he was celebrated as a national hero. Hugo died on May 22, 1885, and received a grand state funeral, cementing his legacy as one of France's greatest cultural icons.
