# James Joyce

## Biography

James Joyce was an influential Irish novelist, poet, and literary critic, born in Dublin in 1882. He became a seminal figure in the modernist movement, celebrated for his innovative use of language and the development of the stream-of-consciousness technique. Joyce’s early life was marked by his Jesuit education and his family’s fluctuating finances. In 1904, he met Nora Barnacle, who would become his wife and the mother of his two children. They spent most of their adult lives on continental Europe, residing in cities like Trieste, Zurich, and Paris. Joyce is best known for his groundbreaking works, including the short story collection Dubliners, the autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and his monumental novels Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. These works pushed the boundaries of literary form and narrative, exploring the complexities of human experience and language. He suffered from severe eye problems throughout much of his life and passed away in Zurich in 1941.
