# Arthur Doyle

## Biography

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish writer and physician, best known as the creator of the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes. Born in Edinburgh, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where his professor, Dr. Joseph Bell, greatly influenced the character of Holmes with his observational and deductive skills. After a brief and unsuccessful medical practice, Doyle turned to writing full-time. His first Sherlock Holmes story, "A Study in Scarlet," was published in 1887. Despite the immense popularity of Holmes, Doyle sought to distance himself from the character to pursue other interests, including historical novels, poetry, and plays. He even attempted to "kill off" Holmes in "The Final Problem" in 1893, only to revive him due to public demand. Doyle was also a vocal proponent of Spiritualism in his later life, dedicating significant time and resources to the movement. Knighted in 1902 for his service during the Boer War, he remained a prolific author and an engaged citizen, involving himself in humanitarian efforts and legal reforms, until his death in 1930.
