# Henrik Ibsen

## Biography

Henrik Ibsen was a celebrated Norwegian playwright, born on March 20, 1828, in Skien. Although his family initially enjoyed prosperity, their financial ruin during his childhood significantly impacted his early life and later work. He began his theatrical career as a stage manager and writer in Norway, developing a critical eye for societal conventions. Frustrated with the limitations in his home country, Ibsen embarked on a self-imposed exile in 1864, living for many years in Italy and Germany. During this prolific period, he penned many of his most renowned plays, including *Brand*, *Peer Gynt*, *A Doll's House*, and *Hedda Gabler*. These works challenged Victorian morality and social norms, establishing him as a pioneer of theatrical realism and earning him the title "father of modern drama." He returned to Norway in 1891 as an internationally recognized literary hero. Ibsen continued to write until a series of strokes in 1900, eventually passing away in 1906. His profound influence on drama continues to resonate worldwide.
