# Mary Shelley

## Biography

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born in London in 1797 to influential intellectual parents, philosopher William Godwin and feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft, who sadly died shortly after her birth. Raised in a stimulating environment, Shelley received an informal yet extensive education, immersing herself in literature and radical thought. At seventeen, she eloped with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, embarking on a life marked by both creative collaboration and profound personal tragedy, including the loss of several children and her husband. In 1818, at the age of twenty-one, she anonymously published her most famous work, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, a groundbreaking novel that established her as a pioneering figure in Gothic horror and early science fiction. Beyond Frankenstein, Shelley authored other novels such as The Last Man, short stories, and essays, and dedicated herself to preserving her husband's literary legacy after his untimely death in 1822. She passed away in 1851, leaving behind a significant and enduring contribution to literature.
