## Biography

Jonathan Swift, born in Dublin, Ireland, on November 30, 1667, was a prominent Anglo-Irish author, clergyman, and satirist. Swift’s father died before his birth, and he was raised largely by his uncle, receiving his education at Kilkenny School and Trinity College Dublin. After his studies, he served as a secretary to the English statesman Sir William Temple, which provided him with valuable experience in political circles.

Ordained as an Anglican priest, Swift’s career took him back to Ireland, eventually becoming the Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. He gained significant recognition for his sharp wit and insightful prose, often publishing his works anonymously or under pseudonyms. He is widely considered the foremost prose satirist in the English language, celebrated for his critiques of human nature and society. His most famous works include the acclaimed novel Gulliver's Travels and the biting essay "A Modest Proposal," both enduring examples of his satirical genius. Swift died in Dublin on October 19, 1745.
