# Robert Louis Stevenson

## Biography

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on November 13, 1850. Despite a childhood plagued by chronic illness, he pursued a career in literature rather than the family tradition of lighthouse engineering or his later study of law. His persistent poor health often necessitated travel, which inspired early works like "An Inland Voyage." Stevenson gained widespread acclaim for his adventure novels, including the enduring classics "Treasure Island" and "Kidnapped," as well as the psychological thriller "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." He also authored the beloved poetry collection "A Child's Garden of Verses." After marrying American Fanny Osbourne, Stevenson settled in Samoa, seeking a climate beneficial to his health, where he was affectionately known as "Tusitala," or teller of tales. He died there on December 3, 1894, at the age of 44.
