# Alexandre Dumas

## Biography

Alexandre Dumas, often distinguished as Dumas père, was a prolific French author born on July 24, 1802, in Villers-Cotterêts. His father, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, was a general of mixed French and Afro-Caribbean descent, a background that is believed to have subtly influenced themes within his extensive body of work. Initially aiming for a legal profession, Dumas found his true calling in literature, first achieving recognition as a successful dramatist in the late 1820s. He soon transitioned to historical adventure novels, a genre in which he became a towering figure. His most enduring and globally celebrated masterpieces include The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, which captivated readers with their thrilling narratives and vivid characters. Dumas was known for his rapid output, often publishing his novels as serials, and he worked with many collaborators throughout his career. Despite his immense popularity and the substantial wealth he accumulated, he frequently faced financial challenges due to an extravagant lifestyle. Dumas’s legacy is that of one of the most widely read French authors, whose works continue to be adapted and enjoyed worldwide. He passed away on December 5, 1870.
