## Biography

James Oliver Curwood was an American action-adventure writer and conservationist, born in Owosso, Michigan, on June 12, 1878. Though expelled from high school, he later studied journalism at the University of Michigan before working as a reporter for the Detroit News-Tribune. Curwood eventually became one of the highest-paid authors of his time, known for his prolific output of wilderness adventure novels. His stories, often set in the Canadian north, Yukon, and Alaska, frequently featured animals as lead characters and explored themes of nature and survival.

Initially a passionate hunter, a profound encounter with a bear led Curwood to become an ardent conservationist. He was appointed to the Michigan Conservation Commission, advocating for wildlife protection. Over his career, he wrote more than thirty novels, many of which were adapted into successful motion pictures. He also famously built Curwood Castle in his hometown, which served as his writing studio. Curwood died on August 13, 1927, at the age of 49.
