# Charlotte Bronte

## Biography

Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist and poet, born on April 21, 1816, in Thornton, Yorkshire, the third of six children to Patrick Brontë and Maria Branwell. She faced early tragedy with the deaths of her mother and two elder sisters. Growing up in Haworth, Charlotte, along with her younger sisters Emily and Anne, and brother Branwell, created elaborate imaginary worlds that fueled their literary ambitions.

Her experiences at Clergy Daughters' School and as a governess heavily influenced her writing. In 1846, the sisters published a collection of poetry under male pseudonyms. Charlotte's most celebrated work, "Jane Eyre," published in 1847 under the name Currer Bell, achieved immediate critical and popular success, notable for its strong female protagonist and blend of realism with Gothic elements. She later published "Shirley" and "Villette." Brontë outlived all her siblings, marrying Arthur Bell Nicholls in 1854, but her life was cut short when she died on March 31, 1855.
