# Александр Блок

## Biography

Alexander Alexandrovich Blok was a leading figure in Russian Symbolism, born in St. Petersburg in 1880 into an intellectual family. His father was a law professor and his mother a writer and translator. After his parents separated, Blok spent his childhood with his maternal grandparents, a botanist and university rector, at their estate near Moscow. He began writing poetry at seventeen and later studied law and then philology at St. Petersburg University. In 1903, he married Lyubov Mendeleyeva, daughter of the famous chemist, and his early collection "Verses on a Beautiful Lady" reflected mystical themes inspired by Vladimir Solovyov. Blok was highly regarded for his literary contributions, influencing many poets of the Silver Age. While he initially welcomed the October Revolution, he grew disillusioned with the new regime. He served in the army during World War I and later worked for the Bolshevik government, though this heavy workload contributed to his declining health. Blok died in 1921 at the age of forty.
